THE FIELD NOTES
Electrical testing
Find the right UK guidance for the task.
Choosing an instrument, interpreting a reading and determining whether an installation complies are different tasks. Start with the applicable professional requirements, then check the exact instrument and accessories.
Different sources answer different questions.
HSE: equipment and safe use
GS38 addresses electrical test equipment used on low-voltage electrical systems. It is a UK regulator source for equipment selection and use, not a product review or a list of approved meters. Non-contact or single-pole indications must not be used as proof of dead.

IET: standards and applicable editions
Use the IET’s official information to identify BS 7671 editions, amendments and transition arrangements. Its public page references Amendment 4:2026. The applicable requirements depend on the work and relevant dates; a public overview does not replace the standard or associated guidance.

Manufacturer documents: exact instrument capability
Check test functions, output voltages, ranges, permitted accessories, discharge behaviour and exclusions in the exact manual. A selectable test voltage does not establish that it is appropriate for connected equipment. Fixed-installation testing, appliance testing and high-resistance electronics measurements are not interchangeable tasks.

Professional teaching: interpreting the testing context
John Ward’s Flameport material explains UK installation-testing concepts. It is a teaching source, not a manufacturer manual or an independent instrument test. Check the applicable requirements and obtain professional review before using procedural advice.

What belongs in an insulation-test brief?
A professional brief should identify the object being tested, applicable standard, connected electronics or SPDs, permitted test conditions and the interpretation required. It should also identify who has the competence to review the procedure. This directory provides no test-voltage instruction, acceptance threshold, isolation sequence or installation certificate.
Check what a safety claim actually supports.
Our CAT evidence guide distinguishes markings, reports and teardown observations. No listed source constitutes our endorsement of a specific instrument’s safety category.
