Can a 1 mA clamp resolve 20 mA?

Separate display resolution from low-current capability, including zero drift, clamp position, magnetic history and the limits of multi-turn tests.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A 1 mA display step does not establish that a DC clamp can reliably measure 20 mA. The range specification, zero offset, drift and repeatability can be large relative to the signal. Assess the exact range under stated conditions, and distinguish single-turn measurements from multi-turn demonstrations. For microamp currents, a different measurement method may be necessary.

Display resolution is only the first line

Suppose a hypothetical clamp range has 1 mA resolution and an accuracy specification of ±(2% + 8 digits). At a displayed 20 mA, the simple stated error is ±8.4 mA before any additional out-of-condition effects. This example is not assigned to a particular product. Use the range error calculator with the correct manual.

A meter that displays 0.001 A is not thereby a microamp instrument. Equally, observing a change on screen does not establish its size with adequate accuracy. Define how small a difference matters for your task before deciding what evidence is sufficient.

Control the variables that can look like current

VariableWhat a useful record includes
Zero and timeZero reading before and after the series, elapsed time and settling rule
Orientation and positionClamp direction, conductor position, nearby current paths
Jaw closureClosure condition and any obstruction
TemperatureAmbient conditions and changes during the series
Magnetic historyPrior exposure and any manufacturer-prescribed zeroing procedure
ReferenceReference method, its uncertainty and whether the load remained steady

AC-only current-transformer clamps and AC/DC clamps do not have interchangeable capabilities. Follow the specific instrument’s instructions; a DC zero adjustment is not a promise that the offset remains fixed.

Read the external tests in context

HKJ’s UT210E review [1] records measurements and construction of a sample. Gough’s review [2] describes a power supply and electronic-load setup and notes settling limitations in early readings. HKJ’s demagnetisation discussion [3] highlights magnetic history, while Mark Hennessy [4] records further sample observations.

Those details are part of the evidence, not distractions to remove from a comparison table. A single reading, a single sample or a different hardware revision cannot establish performance for all units. These linked tests are not our measurements.

Multiple turns answer a different question

Passing a conductor through the jaw N times increases the linked ampere-turns. With an appropriate setup, dividing the indicated current by N can make a small steady test current easier to observe. The turn count, winding geometry and setup must be recorded.

That demonstration does not prove the same sensitivity or error for a single conductor in normal use. Nor should a result around a complete multicore cable be interpreted as ordinary load current without understanding which conductor currents cancel or add.

When to consider another method

A suitable shunt, current amplifier or series meter may be more useful for small DC currents, but each changes the measurement problem. A series method introduces voltage drop; an amplifier has offset and bandwidth limits; a slow display can miss brief pulses.

For battery-powered electronics, record whether the device changes operating state when the instrument is inserted. See burden voltage before treating a lower measured current as the circuit’s normal consumption. Vehicle sleep-state diagnosis belongs to an automotive procedure and is outside this guide.
